Harmony in Contrast: The Dasa House

Architectural Innovation by Hohyun Park and Hyunjoo Kim

The Dasa House, a residential structure, was inspired by its location - the deepest part of the town, overlooking the beautiful landscape. The design had to accommodate a planned future road on the back of the bamboo woods, which led to the house being placed following the shape of the boundary on the town side. This strategic placement allowed for maximum utilization of the green space, with the house's shape reflecting a continuous and fluid space.

What sets the Dasa House apart is its balance and contrast. The façade facing the town is rigid and dark, made of dark metallic brick and black zinc. In contrast, the side facing the bamboo woods is soft and bright, adorned with bright limestone. This juxtaposition extends to the interior as well, with the space expanding dramatically from the entrance to the living room. The overall shape of the house ascends from the entrance to the upper floor, mimicking a ridge.

The structure of the house is reinforced concrete, with exterior finishes of lime stone, brick, and zinc, and interior finishes of paint and marble. The site area is 743.0M2, with a gross floor area of 261.55M2 and a building area of 214.53M2. The building is a two-story structure with a basement.

The Dasa House was designed between March and August 2015, and constructed from August 2015 to December 2016. The house is located in Munsanri, Dasa-eup, Dalseong-gun, Daegu, Korea. The design team included Hyunjoo Kim, and the visual content was credited to Joonhwan Yoon.

For its innovative design and remarkable execution, the Dasa House was awarded Silver in the A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2018. The Silver A' Design Award is bestowed upon top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that exhibit outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
